Maybe even geekier than the recent post we had about the video game wedding invitations comes a wedding proposal by way of a hacked video game. Phill and his fiance (now wife) Anna are avid video game players and Phill wanted to come up with a unique way to ask her to marry him. [via bridepop]
He thought about taking her to the site of their first date, Mount Baker, near Bellingham Washington but didn’t think there would be a way to do it as a surprise. He then came up with the idea of recreating it digitally. He didn’t end there, he was studying computer science at the time and had been tinkering with video games and altering them. He figured way to take a game Anna was currently playing, Chrono Trigger, and modify it with a few of their memories (stargazing, dancing, even her favorite song lyrics from the Princess Bride) and finish the whole thing with his proposal.
He said he had several goals
- Keep the area in the context of the original game, the proposal should be a surprise.
- Get it done quick! I had the ring, I had the Father’s blessing, and you can’t sit on either of those for too long.
- Place memories that might be poignant enough to remind her of our relationship, while not inadvertently giving away that this was somehow hacked.(See goal #1.)
Here is the in-game proposal:
Long ago I met someone very special here, on the top of this mountain near Haven’s Fair. Our love blossomed into something more splendid than the sun. Once, I tried to capture the sun and bring it to my maiden, but it escaped my grasp before she could receive it. Although I could not bring her the sun, the joy she felt for the gift was so strong, it pressed the spirits of our memories on this mountain forever. Perhaps you found some of them familiar, after a fashion. I hope they evoked fond memories of your past. My time here is limited. Before I pass there is one more thing I must do. One thing I promised to pass on. I love my maiden more than anything in the world, and I am her knight. I’m sure she would recognize me under all this armor.
Phill: Anna will you marry me?
As she looked over at him he was on bended knee with the ring out. She said yes, but the first thing she said was, “You are such a nerd…and I love it!”
